The Matilda Highway is a combination of existing highways connecting the New South Wales border, south of Cunnamulla, with Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The Highway is identified by welcoming gateway signs and points of interest along the route are marked with appropriate signage bearing the Matilda Highway logo. |
To connect off-Highway towns and attractions with the Matilda Highway a series of Matilda Byways, utilising existing roads, are being identified and marked with signs in much the same way as the Matilda Highway itself.
Each Byway will have its own identity and those that have so far had, or are about to have, signage erected are as follows:
| Overlander's Way |
Over 1,500 kilometres of diverse, interesting landscape crossing the breadth of Queensland from Townsville to the border at Camooweal, then into the heart of Australia's Northern Territory. The Overlander's Way passes through Charters Towers, Hughenden, Richmond, Julia Creek, Cloncurry and Mount Isa. |

Charleville to the Adventure Way via Quilpie, Toompine and Yowah. |
| Outer Barcoo Byway |
Blackall to Longreach via Isisford and Ilfracombe. |
| Muttaburrasaurus Byway |
Barcaldine to Longreach via Aramac and Muttaburra. |
| Channel Country Byway |
Longreach to Boulia via Jundah, Windorah, Birdsville and Bedourie. |
| Isa Riversleigh Byway |
Cloncurry to Burke and Wills Junction via Camooweal and Lawn Hill. |
| Dinosaur Way |
Hughenden to Winton. |
| Gidyea Bug Byway |
Julia Creek to McKinlay. Unsealed. |
| Marine Fossil Byway |
Richmond to Winton. Forty-five kilometres sealed at the Richmond end, 95 kilometres unsealed, then 82 kilometres sealed to Winton. |
| Cattle Corridor Byway |
Richmond to Croydon. Before travelling, check road conditions with Croydon Shire Council during working hours. |
| Min Min Byway |
Winton to Mount Isa via Boulia. |
| Opal Road |
Twenty-four kilometres from the Adventure Way to Yowah, accessible by four wheel drive vehicle only. Leave gates as you find them. |
| Kenniff Byway |
Amby to Augathella via Mitchell and Morven. |
| Gateway to the Gulf Byway |
Kynuna to the Burke and Wills Junction via Julia Creek. |
| Basalt Byway |
Travel to Hughenden via Torver Valley and the Flinders River (86 kilometres unsealed) or Torver Valley and Dutton River Station (200 kilometres unsealed). |

Aramac to Torrens Creek. |
| Barra Byway |
Burke and Wills Junction to Normaton via Gregory Downs and Burketown. |
| The Great Top Road |
Mount Surprise to Hells Gate via Einasleigh, Forsayth, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton, Karumba and Doomadgee. |
| Mitchell Byway |
Karumba to Mareeba via Dorunda, Kowanyama and Chillagoe. |
| Swagman's Byway |
Winton to Kynuna via old Landsborough Highway (unsealed) from Ayrshire Hills along Diamantina River past Matilda Heritage Sites. |

Barringun to Jerilderie via Bourke, Cobar and Griffith. |
