Self Drive

While some may think the Outback is strictly four wheel drive material - it's not.  Major highways such as the Matilda Highway and Overlander's Way are fully sealed and the accommodation is as varied as it is comfortable.  If you're on the caravan journey of a lifetime, you will be pleased to know nearly all towns have caravan parks.

To reach Queensland's Outback, visitors travel:

  • north-west from Brisbane on the Warrego Highway
  • west from Rockhampton on the Capricorn Highway
  • west from Townsville on the Overlander's Way (Flinders Highway & Barkly Highway)
  • north via Bourke along the Kidman Way from north-west New South Wales to connect with the Matilda Highway.

All highways and major roads are sealed, but it may be necessary to travel on the unsealed roads to reach some of the more interesting attractions.
