Mobile Phone Coverage

There's more than one way to stay in touch in the Outback

The Queensland Outback is a vast and fascinating place. It is good to know there are a variety of telecommunication options available to stay in touch with family, friends, and emergency services, even from some of the most remote locations.

Keep track of what you spend
A Telstra PhoneAway© card is a great way of keeping in touch while limiting how much is spent. It can be used for local, national long distance, International Direct© and mobile calling within Australia and from over 45 countries.

It's great for travellers as it allows them to retrieve urgent messages through private voicemail boxes. Faxes can also be delivered to a user's mail box number. Cards can be used to access Telstra Wireless Hotspots (Fly Buys customers excluded), check email or access the Internet from selected destinations. The cards are pre-paid, making it easier to keep control of costs. More 'talk time' can be added by using the Credit Card refresh service.

As the card is pre-paid, it's ideal for travellers who want to avoid bills when they arrive home, or who are planning to be away from home for some time.

PhoneAway© works with most touchtone phones. If a touchtone phone is not available, the call will go through to an operator who will be able to help.

PhoneAway© cards cannot be used to make calls to 1800, 190, 0055 or 13 numbers, operator assisted calls or calls from public credit card only phones.

PhoneAway© cards are available at selected newsagents, convenience stores and most Australia Post outlets.

Make a call or send an email
Another way to stay in touch while exploring the Outback is by using the Telstra digital CDMA network. At more than twice the size of any GSM network in Australia, Telstra's CDMA network covers approximately 1.5 million square kilometres and 98% of the Australian population (www.telstra.com.au/business/products/mobiles/coverageandnetworks/cdma.htm).

Another benefit of using the Telstra CDMA network is, if you have a laptop with a CDMA 1x compatible device inserted and are connected to the CDMA 1x service, you can access your e-mails or browse the Internet within a coverage area. It's an ideal way to send holiday pictures and emails to friends and family, keeping them up to date with your travels.

To find out more about CDMA and the range of plans and handsets available to suit your needs visit your local Telstra Country Wide dealer or call Telstra Direct on 1800 249 414.
