Dinosaurs & FossilsQueensland's Outback was once part of the 'Great Inland Sea'. This has resulted in the region being rich in fossils. This period dates back 100 million years. Visitors to the region are able to take tours to many of the sites where these fossils can be found. World Heritage listed Riversleigh, an extension of Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park, is the site of some of the most unique fossil finds consisting of previously unknown mammals, birds and reptiles. Lark Quarry near Winton is believed to be the only preserved evidence in the world of a dinosaur stampede. Museums also house fascinating displays of fossils and reconstructed dinosaur skeletons. For example, Kronosaurus Korner in Richmond has displays of marine fossils and the Riversleigh Fossil Centre in Mount Isa interprets the World Heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil Fields. The Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden also houses an international fossil collection as well as interpretive displays of the geological history of the region.
